Fallout 76 Farming Guide

Latest posts by Arron Kluz (see all)

Fallout 76 has come a long way since its release with numerous updates and events. These have added new factions, items, mechanics, and even entire game modes to the series’ first foray into multiplayer. However, the player’s need to gather essential resources has not changed with all of those updates.

Resources are integral to building bases, upgrading, and crafting the gear needed to complete high-level content. So, no matter what kind of Fallout 76 player you are, you’ll have to grind for resources at one point or another. Lucky for you, in this Fallout 76 Farming guide, we’re going to share everything you need to know to do just that.

Key Info Up Front

Resources that can be farmed for Acid, Adhesive, Asbestos, Antiseptic, Aluminum, Ballistic Fiber, Black Titanium, Ceramic, Circuitry, Cloth, Concrete, Copper, Crystal, Fertilizer, Fiber Glass, Fiber Optics, Gears, Glass, Gold, Leather, Lead, Nuclear Material, Oil, Plastic, Rubber, Screws, Springs, Steel, and Wood

Farming Methods: Mining, Killing Enemies, and Deconstructing Junk

Fallout 76 Farming Overview

Effective farming is all about minimizing the time and resources you put into gathering a particular resource while maximizing the amount you get of that resource. There are a few different ways to do this for each of the resources you’ll be looking for in the game.

Sometimes the one you pick will prefer which method you enjoy the most or other personal preference. In contrast, other times, one method will be far superior to the others or will have such a high cost that only high-level players can effectively invest in it.

Either way, no matter what resource you’re looking for, there is a way to get your hands on as much of it as you could need.

Mining

Adhesive Farming

The first method will only pop up for metallic resources, which is mining. There are mines scattered all across the Appalachia wasteland, but to take full advantage of them, you’ll need Power Armor and plenty of power. This is because you’ll need to kit it out with excavating gear.

Otherwise, you won’t get enough from the veins in the mines to make this method worthwhile. So, you’ll either want first to do some farming to keep your power armor running for long enough, or you’ll want to focus on another method until you can afford this one.

Killing Enemies

Killing Enemies is one of the most active ways to farm resources. This method typically sees you traveling across locations and killing a few specific types of enemies that will either drop the resource you’re looking for or items that can be broken down into it.

This keeps you actively playing with a bit more action since somebody has to kill those mutants before they let go of whatever they have. Then, once you wipe them all out, you’ll load them into a different server and do it again.

This method can also be resource-intensive since you’ll be using ammunition and consumables to kill the enemies. Still, it’s probably the most fun and is helpful to keep leveling up at the same time.

Deconstructing Junk

This is undoubtedly the most common way to farm resources. This method will see you completing a route to specific locations on the map that are all relatively close to one another, picking up a certain list of items.

Then, you can take them back to your camp and deconstruct them before loading them into another server to repeat the process. Some of the routes will take long enough to replenish the loot, so you don’t even have to do that part, which makes this method even more attractive.

Acid Farming

Fallout 76 Acid Farming

Used for: Gunpowder, smelting metals

Acid is a precious resource that you’ll need throughout your time with the game. Not only is gunpowder instrumental to making ammunition, but whenever you go to farm metals, you’ll need acid to smelt it into a craftable form.
As you travel around locations, lookout for these items to get the best acid draws from them:

  • Abraxo Cleaner
  • Abraxo Cleaner Industrial Grade
  • Anti Freeze Bottle
  • Bag of Chlorine
  • Bag of Dogwood Fertilizer
  • Bag of Fertilizer

  • Excess Adhesive
  • Handmade Glue

  • Sunrise Fields

Asbestos Farming

Fallout 76 Asbestos Farming

Used for: Weapons and armor

You’ll want loads of Asbestos once you get to crafting the perfect weapons and gear for your builds later in the game. To farm it, you’ll have to focus on collecting various items to deconstruct while also keeping an eye out for Fog Crawlers to kill while you do. You’ll be looking for the following:

  • Biometric Scanner
  • Catch the Commie Board Game
  • Chalk
  • Cigarette Carton
  • Coffee Pot
  • Extinguisher
  • Oven Mitt

  • Ranger District Office
  • Robco Research Center
  • Sugar Grove

Antiseptic Farming

Used for: Consumables

Antiseptic is one of the few that you will likely not need to farm for much. It is primarily for crafting narcotic consumables or healing items, which can be helpful. However, it is so common that you will likely have plenty in your storage at all times. The items with Antiseptic that you’ll find frequently are the following:

  • Abraxo Cleaner
  • Autopsy Board Game

Aluminum Farming

  • Middle Mountain Cabins
  • Mountainside Bed and Breakfast
  • Sunnytop Ski Lanes
  • Watago Emergency Services
  • White Powder Winter Sports

Ballistic Fiber Farming

Used for: Armor

Ballistic Fiber is a must-have resource if you want to craft any armor, especially high-level armor. It is also one of the rarest materials in the game and is often expensive to get since it is dropped by late-game enemies and found in dangerous military bases. When you need to get some, you’ll want to look out for these items:

  • Military Ammo Bag
  • Military-Grade Duct Tape
  • Mysterious Fur
  • Torn Mothman Wing

Since killing Mothman a lot is difficult, as they spawn so irregularly, you’ll need to head to some dangerous locations to gather Ballistic Fiber. To do this, go to these areas:

  • Survey Camp Alpha
  • Survey Camp Delta

  • Bag of Concrete

  • Kanawha County Cemetary
  • Lewis & Son’s Farming Supply
  • Monorail Elevator

Because of how expensive gold is you’ll want to find more upper-class locations like nice residences and restaurants. In particular, go to these:

  • Whitespring Resort

Leather Farming

Used for: Armor and weapons

To get leather you’ll have to track down a variety of animal hides and toys to deconstruct. You can get a number of these by killing the associated animal, but that method is generally slower than just finding the items that contain leather. These items are:

  • Hunter’s Ridge
  • Summersville

Lead

Luckily, with excavator power armor the fastest way to get lead is at Lucky Hole Mine, where you can get over 1,000 lead in one trip. If that is not an option, however, you’ll need to head to any gym and grab all of the weights in there as they will all give you lead.
